Are We Really Surprised?
Thursday 7th May 2026
Good morning, afternoon and evening to you all, and the date in the subtitle is when everything in the UK has changed.
For those of you who didn’t know, there were local elections in the UK on the date in the subtitle, 07/05/26, and the consequences of this politically deserve a dive into.
The title is quite funny to me as well. If I were to answer the question myself, I would not be surprised at all at the outcome of these local elections. Politically, the UK has been flirting with either going far left or far right, and it’s the far right that won. The far right (Reform) didn’t just win; they embarrassed the current party (Labour) in power.
It is to the point that nobody could believe this result of the elections yet, I won’t lie, I saw it from a mile away. I am not surprised that popularity for Reform or Green Party have surged in the past few years, and the typical parties we have known, Labour and the Conservatives, have plummeted in support.
This trend has been seen in other places in Europe, with the far right and far left becoming increasingly popular, and we are seeing a big shift, and finally it has happened to the UK.
Reform and its leader, Farage, have done well. Yes, we have to say it as plainly as that. They have used a concern that people have had within the UK in regard to immigration, and have made it the key to their success to try to make it into power. They recognised how bothered up people were and have used social media to their benefit to spread their beliefs about immigration, and that is how they’ve won.
What Reform supporters are forgetting is that Farage has done this before with UKIP and Brexit, and it seems like they have forgotten that we are still suffering the effects of this.
Not only this, but are they not realising that the party is just drawing in ex-Tory party members who are no longer relevant and still want a piece of the pie? Let’s not forget some of these ex-Tory members were in charge of some of the decisions that have occurred within the country in the past decade.
How much do you guys want to bet that if I were to ask a Reform supporter what exactly it is that they are going to do if in power for this country, how many would you think would have a clue?
What this local election taught me is that there are bigger issues in this country that none of these parties wants to address. This country systematically is in a shithole. It doesn’t take a genius to realise it, yet each party go back and forth over the same things. The media, especially the news, if it isn’t about Iran and the US, it’s about the Jewish community and antisemitism, and if not that, the Russia-Ukraine war is on the back burner just in case and let’s not forget the biggest issue of them all, immigration.
Now, let’s face the issues in the UK. Apart from London, we are crap. Like there’s nothing else that we do to foster economic growth, the financial sector is all we have, and yet it is the most oversaturated job market.
Let’s not even talk about the number of graduates who are job searching and struggling to find a job after university. Let us not look at the cost of living crisis because it hasn’t gotten any better.
Let us not look at wages and how, after the multiple different expenses households have, people are just about getting by. God forbid we talk about housing and how difficult it is to navigate the market. God forbid we speak about the rising petrol prices as well.
There is so much that is wrong; even the bloody education system is failing, and teachers are struggling. Austerity has had no positive impact, as I mean, look at the NHS and even youth clubs or activities to keep teenagers from being pulled into gang life.
There’s so much fundamentally wrong with the UK morally, politically and economically, but the key issues are not the centre of everyone’s focus.
When we are ready to face the real problems in this country, a lot of things and how people vote will change. Bear in mind, this is just local elections, so we are a bit lucky, but if it were general, oh gosh.
Starmer is so cooked it’s beyond repair. His own party members are telling him to quit, and he’s even gone and hired the former prime minister, Gordon Brown, for assistance.
These local elections have provided a lot about the direction of this country and how misinformation has heavily influenced these local elections. All we can do is pray lol.
I hope you all enjoyed this Substack, and let me know what you think about it in the comments. Gave y’all a double post today as I messed up last week, and I thought, why not?
Wish you all a blessed week, and whether you have exams upcoming or anything big on the way, I’m praying that all goes smoothly!

This was gooddd. I definitely agree with your point that the main issues aren't being talked about or prioritised at the moment. But unfortunately, the hard truth is that the current government, and many of those before it, have always tried to manage the fire rather than put it out. They've avoided making the tough calls and decisions, allowing political schemes and games to take precedence over sound judgment. Until they start seriously addressing issues like the state of welfare or what's happening to unis at the moment, people will keep flocking to extremist parties that have little to no actual plan to save the country. But then again, we're human and we're selfish. We don't like the idea of bearing the heat for a few years in order to enjoy the benefits later on. So instead, we keep kicking problems down the road, and the longer we do that, the harder they'll be to solve.
